Gert van Zyl is a medical virologist, employed as specialist at the National Health Laboratory
Service of South Africa at Tygerberg Business unit since 2004. His chief responsibilities are
diagnostic service delivery to Tygerberg Hospital and lecturing medical virology to undergraduate
students at the University of Stellenbosch, Faculty of Health Sciences.
He qualified in 1996 as medical doctor at the University of Pretoria. In 2003 he was admitted as
Fellow of the South African College of Pathologists (Virology) and received his MMed Virological
Pathology at the University of Stellenbosch the following year. In December 2005 he obtained the
qualification: Bachelor of Medical Sciences with Honours (Epidemiology) cum laude at the same
institution.
His current main research interest is antiretroviral resistance. Other interests are epidemiology
and clinical management of infectious diseases. He has been involved in the clinical management,
including antiretroviral therapy of HIV positive patients since 2001 at the Tygerberg Hospital
Infectious Diseases Clinic, where he also participated as sub-investigator in a number of clinical
trials.
